The Island of the Blue Dolphins

The Island of the Blue Dolphins, by Scott O’Dell [YA Fiction]

by Trisha, 6th grader

Based on a true story, this book is about a twelve-year-old girl who gets stranded on her home island, alone. After these mean people named the Aleuts fight and kill the leader of Karana’s tribe (the main girl), also known as her father, the rest of the tribe decides to leave for fear the Aleuts might come back. Karana’s brother gets left back on the island, so Karana jumps out of the boat to save her brother. After a couple of days, her brother gets killed and she is now alone on the island. This exciting action-packed novel tells you about how Karana faced wild dogs, making her own home, and living alone…for 26 years! You will love this book!

I read this book a long time ago, in fourth grade. I think it probably would have been better if I’d read it later, because fourth grade is a little early to be able to understand this book and appreciate it. I thought is was a bit boring and tedious when I read it, but that might be a combination of being too young and the fact that I don’t particularly like survival books. I think that you should still try it, though.
