Deathnote, by Tsugumi Ohba  [Manga, on order!]

by Marina, age 14

Light is an average guy, living a boring, average life. Then, one day, a mysterious notebook falls into his hands. When you write a name in it, the person will die. Very suspenseful and intriguing. The battle of good and evil — but who is which? A great new series, but only for mature middle schoolers and up.

MARS

Mars manga series, by Fuyumi Soryo [YA manga]

by Wendy, 12th grader

Most high-school dramas are full of shallow characters and overused plot devices. Not so with Mars. Spanning fifteen books, this manga series follows the characters of Kira, a shy artist, and Rei, a wild playboy. Sounds cliched and overdone, but these two are actually some of the deepest and most profound characters I have ever read about as their relationships, personalities, and pasts gradually emerge. Full of drama and twists and turns, Mars provides some interesting perspective on issues like love (of course!), bullying, sexual harassment, and humanity. Don’t look for sugar-coating high school life, though — it doesn’t get more nitty gritty than this.

She learns that she is the reincarnation of an ancient priest named kikyo. With the help of inu-yasha and friends she learns that she must kill a demon. If you like ancient Japanese mythology, these are the books for you.

Rurouni Kenshin, by Nobuhiro Watsuki [manga]

by Marina, 8th grader

Rurouni Kenshin is about a wandering samurai with a hidden past. He’s kind, unselfish, and is trying to undo his past as the Hitokiri Battosai, the well
-known and feared assassin. He meets friends whom he protects and vows to never kill again, to repent for his past. I can’t much more, or I’ll spoil it, but it’s a must read.
